Be Thou At Peace

Posted by John Wilburn Schneider, III on April 12, 2001:

You stand in silent guard over us
Never seen or heard since God called you home
Except once your volley you accompanied
A howling wind grown from a cold still morning
As the mournful sound of "Taps" cried over your flag
You bade us a roaring good-bye.
Until the bugler's last note faded.
A wind blew down the cliff and over the Hudson.
Then it quickly faded into a cold April morning
So long ago.

And now a quarter century is past.
Some sadness still remains.
I never said good-bye to you.
There never seemed to be the time.
But upon reflection you seemed to know
And waited just a little while
Before you gave your lion's heart to God
You cast a farewell to the skys.
You have not gone so far away though,
For I swear that I can see you in your grandchildren's eyes.

In loving memory of my departed hero, teacher, father.
