Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Doris Downing Miller on July 22, 2007:

I met General Downing in 1995 at an American World War II War Orphans meeting in Seattle, Wa. He was so gracious and caring. My maiden name was Downing and he made a special point of introducing himself to me and sharing information about his ancestors and presenting me with his medallion, one side with the four stars and the other side with the black spade of the special operations. I have a photo of the two of us and it is in a special place of honor at my home in Sweetwater, Colorado, Downing Bend Ranch. My father was killed in action June 13, 1945 on Mindanao Island, Philippines and I asked Gen. Downing about visiting the island, he cautioned me that it was not the time to visit, maybe sometime in the future but recommended a visit to the American Cemetery in Manila where my father was buried. He was a true gentleman!
In his memory,
Doris Downing Miller
