I have known GEN Downing since he was a Major in the 1st Battlion/75th Infantry (Rangers) in Nov of 1974. He has been my close personal friend and Mentor since then. I was at his Retirement ceremonies at SOCOM Hqs at McDill AFB, Tampa, Fl and asked him what he was going to do now. He said, going to go fishing. That was until President Bush called him to become a member of his staff. GEN Downing will be missed by the Rangers/SOCOM/Special Forces, his West Point classmates and this Country. GEN GREB a.k.a.
