My first recollections of "Loddie" came from watching him play Rugby for West Point. My son played for the Army team as well and they played side by side for over two years. He was a scrappy player who impressed me with his grit and daring. He was not afraid to take risks and if one of his teammates got in a tight spot, you could be sure Loddie would be there to help sort things out. They say that sports help build character; I disagree. I believe sports reveal character. And by any measure Loddie was a fellow you could depend on. Off the pitch he was well liked by his teammates and friends. When Andrew told me of his death, I felt as if I had lost one of my own boys; That's how close the members of this team were.
