Be Thou At Peace
Posted by Mark Conforti on March 31, 2004:
Gramps! What a guy! Never another person I met at West Point who bled Army Green while at the same time trying so hard to give the impression he did not totally buy into Cadet Gray. But that was just the impression, not the reality. Whenever anyone took the time to actually talk to Roy, you knew he loved every minute and everything about being a cadet and a future officer.
He truly was one of those people who would give you the shirt off of his back if you needed it, but at the same time let you know in no uncertain terms when you were just whining and really didn't need anything other than to suck it up.
My best memories of Roy were the many long nights "dippin' skoal," drinking "cokes (well not always just coke)" and eating Tony's pizzas hiding from the OD as we were playing Risk, Spades, Poker with monopoly money as our oh so clever attempt to convince folks we weren't gambling, in the study rooms after taps; and the many afternoons and weekends just shooting the breeze, complaining about JJ (our second Tac) or hearing about what it was really like out there in the real Army.
Gramps, you were a good man! I wish we had stayed in touch better once we left West Point, but you were a fairly private man and I didn't push it. My loss! Hope you found peace in your final resting place.
