Be Thou At Peace
Posted by William R. Bishop - USMA 1979 on June 9, 2008:
I first met Mr. Gorbandt as a New Cadet in the summer of 1978 when he was a member of the platoon I led. He had the usual ups and downs of all New Cadets...but he also had just about the greatest sense of humor I have ever seen. I saw him on a routine basis during the academic year of 1978-79 and always just smiled when I saw him coming across North Area. When he spotted me he made a point to pass in front of me so I could pretend to yell at him for messing up his salute, forgetting the proper salutation, etc. etc. etc. In other words...it was fun to mess with him - and he knew it!
I knew that Gorbandt had died many years ago and came across this web page when seeing who I knew from USMA had passed away. Just sitting here and keying this in brings back memories of a skinny 18-year old kid who was sweating under the hot summer sun of August, 1978...and trying to avoid being noticed by the cadre.
Well...it has been 30 years since those long ago days and Mr. Gorbandt will always remain forever young in my mind.
He was a good Cadet and a good person....and I miss him.
His Beast Platoon Leader, Bob Bishop COL, USAR
