Be Thou At Peace
Posted by john Herren on March 16, 2009:
Bob was a towering figure among our many classmates and other acquaintances that I have known. As was pointed out at the memorial service last Saturday he was quick to take on any reasonable task asked of him. I saw this in his response and action in the West Point Wounded Warrior Program which he helped start at Walter Reed Army Hospital. We were looking for someone to come up with a data base so that we could match mentors and wounded soldiers and he volunteered. When we began to expand our effort and got another volunteer to do the match-up, Bob without hesitation switched to running our follow-on mentor match-up data base. Bob also attended many of the monthly birthday brunches for the wounded at Walter Reed and counseled the wounded and their families.
Bob was always willing to make the Malone Trophy presentation at the annual Georgetown U. ROTC Ball when asked to do so. One time, when the scheduled speaker dropped out at the last minute, Bob was asked to give the talk and from all reports, he did a superb job in his usual forceful and humorous manner.
Bob was a great guy to work with as I found out during our Walter Reed mentoring experience. His loss will be deeply felt by all of us in that program as well as by me personally. As a former 1st Cavalry Division Vietnam veteran, I know what he went through as a 1/9th Cavalry troop commander. He was a real hero in my book. "Garry Owen", Bob. John Herren.
