Be Thou At Peace
Posted by Mike Mamer on April 23, 2012:
I didn't really get to know Nick until the Transportation Basic Course. That was one wild basic course. One of my favorite stories from that time was when we were out at AP Hill on an FTX. It was a hot, humid August evening as we filed out of the mess hall. Someone mentioned how good a cold beer would taste right about now. Well...Nick and I decided to do something about it. We left our weapons and protective masks with friends and hitchhiked down the road to a small grocery. We each bought a 6 pack of beer and placed it perfectly in our protective mask case. We hitchhiked back to AP Hill and strolled on back to our basecamp. Word quickly spread that there was cold beer over in Tessio's tent. There was a scurry of activity and beelines to Nick's tent. In a matter of seconds the muffled swoshing sound of aluminum cans popping their tops could be heard above the din of insect noises. It wasn't much, but it dramatically improved morale.
Thank you for being a great soldier and friend.
