Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Robert "Billy" Wrenn on March 16, 2005:

On the one night, I can remember sleeping in pup-tents in Camp Darby, Ranger Class 10-80, Stewart was my "tent-mate". On that night, he had a spiritual experience. In the morning, somewhat shaken and nervous, but self-assured, he described it to me and informed me of what he had to do. Instantly, in my gut, I believed it to be true. I am only ashamed to say that I did not testify openly on his behalf. I pray that God forgive me for that. Because of Stewart's spiritual experience, he confidently chose the less popular path, of leaving Ranger School that very morning, with little hesitation. He was judged and taunted, and probably humiliated by many.

...But hasn't that been the way of religious men throughout the ages?

Stewart left Ranger School accompanied by all the stigma and disapproval associated with such an unpopular decision. I did not doubt his experience and I respected his decision then as I do now. Maturity and experience has caused me to be more open-minded to spiritual matters.

Isaiah 50: 6-8
I give my back to those who beat me and my cheeks to those who pull out my beard. I do not hide from shame, for they mock me and spit in my face.

Because the Sovereign LORD helps me, I will not be dismayed. Therefore, I have set my face like a stone, determined to do his will. And I know that I will triumph. He who gives me justice is near.

Stewart wanted to serve his God. He followed his heart, and I salute him.

Lead the way Stewart!

Your Ranger Buddy, and Brother in Christ,

Robert "Billy" Wrenn '82
