Be Thou At Peace
Posted by Palmer McGrew on April 8, 2007:
Dick told me this story a couple of times and I must admit that I hadn't remembered that he even played hockey. Apparently he was pretty good despite my ignorance. In one game he had repeatedly been slashed at by an opponent and was getting hurt by him repeatedly, all cheap shots and illegal. Finally he had had enough and took his stick and executed a bayonet thrust to the gut, putting the opponent out of the game. He got a 5 minute major penalty, which he had been expecting and happily took his seat in the penalty box. Unfortunately, the Comm was at the game and slugged him the next day for conduct unbecoming. Tough little guy!
After Dick retired from the Army he bought a company that made security cameras. That turned out to be a stroke of luck, at least that's the way he always portrayed it. I think he may have been too modest. His version was that shortly after he bought the company his cameras were suddenly in high demand. Maybe so, maybe just good management.
Dick's other athletic passion after hockey was golf. He used some of the profits from the security business to make a major gift to West Point, the gold training center. I hope we will all get a chance to see it at our 50th in 08.
