Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Frank Harlem on May 19, 2007:

One of my fondest memories of cadet days was the rare weekend away from West Point when Alex invited me and Hal Lyon to spend the weekend at his home in Schenectady, NY. We had a grand time roaming Al's old haunts, but what I most fondly remember was the Satuday night feast Al's mom prepared for the three of us. There must have been six or seven delicious courses, with enough food for at least ten people. To this day, it is the most memorable Italian meal I've ever had. Although Al's mom didn't speak English, she lavished love on Al and his buddies that weekend. Al inherited the warmth and generosity of his mother and always extended these admirable traits toward me whenever we saw each other or otherwise communicated over these last fifty years. Alex died on my birthday, which will hereafter cloud that day annually.
