Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Jerome Lewis on May 20, 2007:

Alex and I were competitors and teammates for most of the four years, and he seemed to always be in attendance at the mini-reunions, the 5-year reunions at West Point, and some other alumni functions. He retired early, and as it turned out worked at the same company as I did if you count the series of mergers. That was Lockheed Martin. We did a Plebe Hike together in 2001 along with 10 other classmates. It seems like he was doing the right thing in hiking to stay in shape. He had given up running some time ago, and had a regular hiking group. In 2005 he contacted me regarding a wine tour he was taking with his Phoenix hiking group. They had participated in the 12 kilometer (7.6 mile) Bay to Breakers in San Francisco on the following day.

After two years of Army Track & Field, Alex dropped the 2-season sport, since he wanted to concentrate on Co. C-2 business and on other extra-curricular activities. In the Fall, he was raring to go -- always giving his best -- in the various 5 mile courses in Cross Country; he lettered in the sport. It was a proud moment when I asked him to receive the Cross Country Team Award for me. His picture was taken at the Cadet Parade Awards Ceremony, and later I gave him the picture since it was sent to me.

Alex attended the Leaders Conference in August 2001 at West Point, as we both represented our respective West Point Societies. We took a walk down to the track, and snapped a few pictures during the lunch break.

It was interesting reading his biography for the 50 year book. I am sure I heard some of that at the team table we shared so many years, such as speaking Italian at home!

When I saw Alex at the reunions, we always had time to chat about the good old cadet days. He had a good sense of humor about running, and must have been a great influence on me.

He was a great guy, and he will be missed by many, especially by Lois, and his children.

JERRY
