Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Elaine Poore on November 15, 2011:

I can summarize my thoughts and feelings towards Granddad in three words: gratitude, love and admiration. I am still learning about the adventures in his life, but know from my experiences with him that he conducted himself to the best of his abilities in dignity, compassion and courage.

He never failed to demonstrate his concern for me (whether I wanted to hear what he had to say or not!) or any of our family and always found common ground to connect with me. I knew every year that went by that he loved me; I got to know him a bit once I myself was an adult; and I got to say "thank you, I love you, good-bye" on one of his last days of consciousness. I am so thankful.

During that last visit, when he recognized me holding his hand, he said, "what a life" with a little smile.

Amen.
