Thomas Matthew Rienzi

West Point, 1942

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Joseph Tedeschi, '57 on December 19, 2010:

A number of interactions with General Rienzi from West Point to Hawaii to Army Staff. Most memorable was a chance meeting at Pentagon Officers Athletic Club in 1975-76 time frame. He told me he was very tired because he had been up all previous night "rescuing" street people in Washington, D.C. as part of his formation process for the diaconate. That a two star general would stay up all night roaming the streets of Washington to give aid and comfort to people living in the streets really stuck with me - and was a big factor in my committing to become a deacon years later. If "Rienzi stories" sound a little far-fetched, believe me, they are not. This remarkable man influenced the lives of people all over the world. We are all better for it. R.I.P.
