I served as a Recruit (Private) under Captain Grant at Fort Devens, Massachusetts and Pine Camp, NY (Camp Drum) from Sept 1948 to September 1949. He commanded a Company of the 7th Regimental Combat Team of the 3rd Infantry Division. I was part of a two man Bazooka rocket team. Captain Grant asked me to join him as part of the Regimental Golf Team. We played as partners in a number of golf matches. In two different matches we were challenged by the Post Commander Major General Robert W. Grow and one of his aides. Philip Grant was a superb commanding officer. I post these comments on the 74th anniversary of my entering the United States Army, Sept 9, 2022 |
