Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Roland R. Augenstein on July 13, 2017:

Colonel Badger was my Brigade Commander when I was a newly minted 2nd Lieutenant with my first assignment being a company commander at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. Later he was my Brigade Deputy Commander at Headquarters 20th Engineer Brigade at Bien Hoa, South Vietnam under General K.B. Coper. Although we never socialized, I came to know Colonel Badger as even tempered, level headed, and a very decent human being. He was always polite but firm with subordinates and displayed a sensitivity towards others that garnered the admiration of all who knew him. Years later and after reflection of that time in my life I realized that I owe him a debt of gratitude that I wanted to acknowledge. I have no doubt that when I arrived at Long Binh, S. Vietnam, Colonel Badger saw my name on the engineer officer's availability roster and had me assigned to the 20th. I didn't know it at the time, but by assigning me to Brigade Headquarters he kept me out of harm's way. Although never discussed, I can't help but think that keeping me out of harm's way was a conscious decision on his part and was based upon our prior association at Ft. Leonard Wood. I only wish I could have thanked you in person for being my guardian angel. With fondest memories.
