Colonel Eugene Peyton Deatrick had a distinguished military career of 28 years. His first fifteen months of military service following graduation from the Military Academy was in the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF), followed by nearly 27 years in the U.S. Air Force (USAF). He flew more than 50 different types of aircraft (propeller driven and jets) while accumulating more than 12,000 hours of flying. He earned the wings of a USAF Command Pilot. His military awards include the Legion of Merit with one oak leaf cluster, the Distinguished Flying Cross with one oak leaf cluster and the Air Medal with 22 oak leaf clusters. During the summer of 2019, the director of West Point's Center for Oral History interviewed Col. Deatrick.
