Be Thou At Peace

Posted by jimmy joe bramblett on October 20, 2010:

I served under General Poe from 1978-1980. I was in the 2750th Logistics squadron VIP sub unit. I regularly drove his 72 black LTD staff car. I remember I would arrive early at his home on base and wait by the car. As a VIP unit member it was my duty to show ceremonial respect to the General as he came out of the house. I would be doing my thing and the General would say "Now stop that Jim" he would take the keys and drive me to the flight line and people would be saluting, then turning around in shock, as I rode in the passinger seat. The General would hop out fast, on the flight line, as I tried to beat him to the door. I rush into attention and salute. He would laugh and say "I beat you again Airman." I would finish my duty by standing and saluting as the wheels of his plane left the runway. Then return to my other duties of picking up VIP's going to area B test facilities. The General always liked to tell me stories and I loved to hear them. He will be missed by me. I think he was a fine man and a hero to many of us who served under his command.
