William H. Jenkins

West Point, 1946

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Jacob Grigsby on October 3, 2010:

William H. Jenkins was THE greatest man to ever live. I am his grandson and I miss him more than anything in the world. Growing up, he was a father to me, and I miss him dearly. I remember dewy mornings with him on the golf course, breakfasts with him and mammaw, and watching cartoons with him as he fell asleep in his illustrious "chair." Bill was caring and compassionate to the highest degree. I honestly can't go a day without remembering him. Falling asleep next to him during early morning sermons up in the balcony (for which he always had peppermints for my sister and I). When I was younger I would even get on the bus from his house in the mornings instead of my house. I remember doing crosswords with him and watching the birds. My pappaw was a truly amazing man and I can't wait to see him again someday. I am now currently attending the University of Tennessee and am majoring in Chemical Engineering, for which he was also an engineer. I do my homework everyday with his old slide ruler right by my side. The leather casing to his ruler contains etchings and tid-bits annotating his "West Point days." He held West Point in the highest esteem and always got a bit too rowdy for the epic "Army-Navy" game. He had a seemingly endless number of stories that he would tell and would converse with just about anyone (especially at Claude Russell's Barber Shop, on the golf course, and at church). William H. Jenkins was the image Christ in flesh. Integrity, honesty, responsibility, you name it, he possessed every characteristic of the sort. West Point made him who he was and who he shall forever remain. R.I.P. Pappaw, I miss you, and I love you with all my heart.
