Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Harry G. Cramer III LTC, USA (Ret) on April 12, 2018:

This morning I was passing through Charles Town, West Virginia and took the opportunity to pay respects at the grave of Frank Beckwith Tucker. Taffy Tucker, as he was known, was my father's room-mate, best friend, and "best man" at my parents' wedding. He died a hero on a nameless hill in Korea in 1951. He's been gone so long now, that I wonder if anyone remembers him at all. But he was loved by all back in his day. Mom and Dad shared stories of Taffy's humor, his passion for the Taylorcraft airplane he owned at Fort Benning, and his wonderful singing voice. He loved a sng called "A Tavern In The Town". I said a prayer at Captain Tucker's grave, left a coin on the headstone, and made my way back out of the Zion Episcopal graveyard. I sang the chorus of his favorite song as I left: "Adieu, kind friends, adieu...I can no longer stay with you...I will hang my heart on a weeping willow tree, and may the world go well with thee."
