Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Stan Sanders on January 19, 2003:

At 14 years old when my Uncle Fred passed away, I was honored along with his other nephews to be a pall bearer at his funeral. I was very proud as a sitting U.S. Senator and Governor attended.

Fred's words and deeds inspired me in my own life. I was fortunate to spend a good deal of time with him in his last few years in Hilton Head where he and Aunt Imogene treated me like their own son. Uncle Fred spents countless hours with me, I didn't realize it at the time, but he was teaching me lessons that would stay with me throughout my life.

I cried terribly at his wake, I wanted to be more dignified like he was, but his passing left a great chasm in my heart. Yet throughout my life until now, his memory served as a tremendous inspiration for me.

I later served in the Navy, finished college, became a husband and father and finally a police officer. My own dedication to God, Family and Country was inspired by his devotion to that principle.

God bless,
