Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Don Murphy on October 13, 2020:

General Hoefling was my brigade commander in Vietnam in 1968-69 in the 101st Airborne Division. He was the best commander any infantry rifle company commander ever had. I will always remember the first day we met. It was on Fire Base Veghel west of Hue. He assured and promised me repeatedly that his job was to ensure my company always had the resources needed for success in battle. He lived up to his promise at all times. Later it was my privilege to be at Ft. Benning, GA and in the Washington D.C. area at the same time he was in those locations. In 2017 he helped me receive a retroactive (lost) Bronze Star award for my Vietnam service. He expressed pride and delight in doing this "for one of his soldiers and fellow officers". I also found his wife Patricia to be a wonderful lady, dedicated officer's wife, and a caring, gracious hostess. They will always be in my thoughts and prayers.
