Be Thou At Peace

Posted by BG (R) Stephen Korenek on April 5, 2016:

I served as BG Hall's PIO at Ft Wainwright, AK in '72-'73. He was truly professional but not stiff, in fact he displayed a good sense of humor with all, regardless of rank. A particular event, which might have aroused another to anger, occurred in Barrow, AK on the Arctic Ocean coast. In the dark and dead of the Arctic winter we agreed to a trip by open tracked vehicle to visit the crash marker where Will Rogers and Wiley Post had died. In spite of knowledge that we would be in a very cold location during the Barrow visit, LT Bob Peck, BG Hall's aide, had forgotten the general's parka. No worry, according to BG Hall, a man of small stature, as Peck was just his size and the parka got a new, albeit, temporary owner. BG Hall took the situation in stride without words of recrimination to the forgetful LT.

My spouse and I enjoyed a couple of evenings of duplicate bridge with the Halls and others, all much better bridge players than we. Although the Deputy Post Commander did express displeasure at my boneheaded bids, BG Hall never did, keeping the competition light.

I have thought of my time in his command often over the years and wish I had stayed in touch. He was a fine officer.
