Be Thou At Peace

My wife Joan and I were present at Middletown Airport in 1974 and saw the launch of Thomas Gatch's balloon Light Heart. Having just been married two years earlier and us on a very strict budget as a Navy veteran in college it was a spectacular media covered adventure and very well attended - an epic event. A sense of optimism was prevalent - and the mood was that of support as proud Americans and patriotism. A few days later my wife and I were so deeply saddened to know our new found hero had met his untimely demise. |
