Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Fred Gaede on July 1, 2008:

With the passing of Jim Hutchins the military history community lost one of its premier researchers and authors. While he could reveal eclectic interests, his primary focus was the U.S. cavalry in the post-Civil War years. A number of his publications about Custer have stood the test of time.
Few equaled the breadth of knowledge he had acquired about our military heritage and artifacts. This is evident in the numerous articles he wrote, all of which are masterfully written. Further, his deep familiarity with archival records enabled Jim to make connections that few realized existed. Even his book introductions are gems to read and study!
Although not alone among those with whom he shared his resources, I was privileged to have had Jim as a mentor. We worked together on several articles which were published in Military Collector & Historian. We enjoyed many lunches discussing topics and going over drafts. Along the way he directed me to a number of the 'nooks and crannies' he had so painstakenly discovered in the National Archives.
I will never write as well as Jim did; but my efforts are better for his guidance. Thanks for so many years of freindship, Jim. I will truly miss the sound of your voice and hearty laugh.
