Be Thou At Peace

Posted by William B. Wilson on September 8, 2013:

My father, Leo Wilson, served under Colonel Finley's command during the Korean War and remembered him with respect and admiration.

Recently, my brother provided me a copy of a letter written by Colonel Finley on behalf of my father in 1964, when they were again serving together at Fifth Army Headquarters in Chicago.

Colonel Finley's letter was addressed to the Adjutant General. In the letter, he took care to recount actions undertaken by my father when he served as a rifle platoon leader under then-Captain Finley's command. Colonel Finley further requested his letter be added to my father's permanent records so that a description of my father's actions during the Battle of Chipyong-Ni would be visible to those reviewing my father's records for subsequent assignment and promotion.

That Colonel Finley did this fully thirteen years after the action in Korea speaks volumes for his loyalty to, and support for his former subordinates. Reading Colonel Finley's letter caused me to recall my father's kind comments about his former commander and made clear the reason for my father's lifelong admiration of him as a soldier and a leader.
