Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Ben Fegan on June 26, 2017:

Frank was my tactical officer (C-2) and I worked with him in Vietnam when he commanded the 3rd Bde., First Infantry Division. My cadet roommate and I played a practical joke on him and he summoned as to breakfast with him on the poop deck the following day. A gentleman with a wry sense of humor!

In Vietnam I was attached to his brigade while commanding an armored cavalry troop. As a separate commander I had several incidents with some of his senior commanders and staff officers. In each incidence he supported me and the troopers I commanded.

Once when we were between missions we were resting/refitting in Frank's bde base camp (Lai Khe). A group of our cavalry officers were dining in the officers' club and decided to go to Frank's quarters and sing to him. We placed the club's piano on the hood of a jeep and proceeded to his quarters and found him waiting for us sitting in his shorts on his front steps. He politely listened to our song and then suggested that we return the piano to the club in the same condition in which we had found it! Again, a gentleman with a wry sense of humor!
