Be Thou At Peace

Posted by George Bisker on January 3, 2009:

My sincere condolences go out to the entire family. I was a plebe and yearling at West Point when General Scott was the Superintendent, and I can vouch that he was respected and loved by everyone there.

I have a personal memory of General Scott that I'd like to share, and I hope it brings a smile to anyone who knew his love of Army sports.

I played drums in the Cadet Band, and really enjoyed showing my spirit for the Army team. I played the tri-toms (a set of 3 drums) and I well remember hiking them up the steps behind the chapel to get to Michie Stadium from the barracks.

On occasion, I saw him watching me play, and I was flattered that he seemed to get a kick out it. I used to pride myself that we shared a small bond over drums and Army sports. Then there was one day when the band was playing at a soccer game, and I was playing with my usual flair for the dramatic when General Scott approached me. "You're pretty good at those," he said to me. To which I could only reply, "Thank you, Sir!" He then asked, "Do you mind if I give it a try?" I gladly handed my drums to him and he put them on and played them. He thanked me and handed them back, gave me a nod and a smile, then went and found his seat.

It was the personal touches that endeared him to people, and I will always remember him.
