RUSSELL SMITH OBITUARY
Russell H. Smith, 85, formerly of Bethel Park, died Tuesday, April 2, 2013, after a courageous battle with prostate cancer.

He was the beloved husband of 62 years to Jean M. Smith (who passed away April 3, 2013) and longtime member of St. Thomas More Roman Catholic Church. He was the loving father of Carolyn Fischer, of Maple Valley, Wash., Russell C. Smith, of Cliff, N.M., and Stephen Smith, of South Park; devoted grandfather of Amanda Toothman, of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., Melanie Smith, of Bethel Park, Heidi Fischer-Ortega and Darcy Fischer, both of Albuquerque, N.M.; and great-grandfather of Adrian Ortega, of Albuquerque, N.M.

Russ was born in Springfield, Mass., and graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., in 1949.

Rising to the rank of colonel in the Air Force and serving a tour in Vietnam as a fighter pilot, he retired from the Air Force in 1977.

Russ then developed a course in avionics maintenance for the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics and worked for Westinghouse Nuclear Services Division as a senior field service engineer for 11 years before retiring in 1992.

Russ enjoyed golf and volunteered for Meals on Wheels.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, April 8, 2013, at St. Thomas More Church, 126 Fort Couch Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15241.

His remains will be cremated and following a Mass of Christian Burial at the Catholic Chapel of the Most Holy Trinity at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., will be inurned in the Columbarium of the Old Cadet Chapel in the West Point Cemetery alongside his lifelong love and soul mate.
