H. DICKINSON, ARMY GENERAL, DIES AT AGE 68

Hillman Dickinson, 68, a retired Army lieutenant general who served two tours of duty in Vietnam, died of pancreatic cancer Sept. 2 at his home in Arlington. He had lived in the Washington area since 1962.

In Vietnam, he served as a squadron commander in the 11th Armored Cavalry regiment in 1967 and 1968 and was senior adviser to the South Vietnamese Army's 1st Division in 1971 and 1972.

Gen. Dickinson, who served in the Army for more than 30 years, spent much of his career in defense research and development. Over the years, he had been a manager with the Defense Department's Advanced Research Projects Agency and was the Defense Communications Planning Group's deputy director for engineering.

From 1979 until retiring in 1982, he was director of command, control and communications (C3) systems under the joint chiefs of staff. In this post, he worked to improve the survivability and reliability of communications systems.

Gen. Dickinson, a native of Independence, Mo., was a winner of the Westinghouse Science Talent Search as a youth. He was a 1949 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, and he received a master's degree from physics at Columbia University and a doctorate in plasma physics from the Stevens Institute of Technology.

He had taught chemistry and physics at West Point from 1956 to 1960. In 1977, he was academic chairman of the West Point Study Group established after a 1976 Academy cheating incident. He wrote the group's final report.

His military decorations included the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star with "V" for valor and Air medals with "V" for valor. He also was a recipient of the Armed Forces Electronic Association's Distinguished Service Medal.

After retiring from active duty, he served as a vice president of Jaycor, a Defense Department-related company with offices in Tysons Corner, from 1983 to 1990. He also was a consultant to the Rand Corp. and the Institute for Defense Analyses. He was a member of the Cosmos Club and the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Nancy Cameron Dickinson of Arlington; a daughter, Cynthia Louise Dickinson of Alexandria; a son, Stuart Chapman Dickinson of Bristol, R.I.; and a granddaughter.
