CHANDLER, JOHN PALMER
COL US ARMY
WORLD WAR II, KOREA, VIETNAM

He served over 31 years in the Army, first as an enlisted man in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and subsequently as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

His principal assignments included command of engineer units at platoon, company, battalion and group level, engineer advisor to the armed forces of South Korea, Bolivia and the Republic of Vietnam and general staff officer in the Office of the Army Chief of Staff.

His final assignment was as the Division Engineer of the New England Division, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, where he was appointed to the International Joint Commission (United States and Canada) and briefly as Chairman of the New England River Basins Commission.

His decorations include the Army Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit with two clusters, Meritorious Service Medal and Joint Service and Army Commendation medals.

He was also decorated by the governments of Bolivia, and Republic of Viet Nam.

Spouse:

Jane Campbell Chandler, 91, of Hill, NH and more recently of Meredith Bay Colony Club in Meredith, NH, died peacefully at the Lakes Regional General Hospital on December 3, 2018.

She was born July 26, 1927, in St. Louis, MO, to Edward Jameson Campbell and Mary Whaley Campbell.

She graduated from Washington University in St. Louis in June 1949.

She married John Palmer Chandler of Cambridge, MA in December 1949.

As an army wife, she spent 31 years accompanying John throughout the U.S. and to several foreign countries.

After John's retirement, she taught school in Danbury, NH and spent six years as the kindergarten teacher in Hill, NH.
She also served as the Hill Librarian for five years.

Jane is survived by her three daughters.

Burial will be held in the spring on Murray Hill.
