Retired Army Col. Patrick Joseph Donohoe, 80, of Annapolis for 27 years, died of heart disease May 7 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

Col. Donohoe was born July 6, 1927, in Columbus, Ohio.

He graduated from St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland, Ohio, and from the U.S. Military Academy, MIT and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

He served in the Army Corps of Engineers from 1949 to 1972, serving in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He directed clean-up operations at Bikini Atoll in 1968, and served in Austria and Germany at various times. He also taught at West Point for several years.

He received the Purple Heart, the World War II Victory, Bronze Star, Korean Service, United Nations Service, National Defense Service, Army of Occupation, Vietnam Service and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medals, the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation Badge and the Legion of Merit.

He taught at O'Connell High School in Arlington, Va., and worked at AEC and the Department of Energy.

He was a member of the Third Order Franciscans, St. Mary's Church, where he was a lector and Eucharistic Minister, Cursillo Fourth Day and the Right-to-Life Committee.

He enjoyed playing football and ice hockey, sailing, Catholic Theology and spirituality, and math logic. He was an avid reader and always read his Bible.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Leo V. Donohoe.

Survivors include his wife of over 50 years, Jane Middleton Donohoe; one son, Patrick J. Donohoe Jr. of Blacksburg, Va.; five daughters, Deborah A. Donohoe of Tacoma, Wash., Shannon T. Little of Santa Barbara, Calif., Mary D. McGarvey of Springfield, Va., Regina D. Spillane of Blacksburg, Va., and Elizabeth A. Donohoe of Annapolis; one sister, Rosanne T. Donohoe of Olney; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
