Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Susan Lee Hindman on February 10, 2012:

My Dad LTC Edward Roy Hindman, Sr., United States Army, Retired, went home eternally to be with our wonderful and loving Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Dad really loved the Salvation Army and gave support to that ministry toward the end of his earthly life. I had the distinction and pride of leading my own precious Dad in the sinner's prayer! The great 19th century English hymn of the Church is called "Onward, Christian Soldiers". The words were written by Anglican priest Sabine Baring-Gould in 1865, and the music was composed by Sir Arthur S. Sullivan in 1871. The Salvation Army adopted this hymn as its favored processional. The hymn's theme is taken from the New Testament in verse 3 from the words of Paul the Apostle in II Timothy 2:1-3: "Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ." My Dad was a USMA Cadet Chapel usher in his cow (junior) and firstie (senior) years at West Point who served God and the Corps of Cadets at Sunday morning Church services. Dad also was a cadet Captain and Battalion Commander at the Academy and led his troops marching out on The Plain. Dad went marching up into heaven in outstanding form on his graduation day on September 12, 2005!!!

ONWARD CHRISTIAN SOLDIERS

Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus going on before.
Christ, the royal Master, leads against the foe;
Forward into battle see His banners go!

Refrain

Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus going on before.
At the sign of triumph Satan's host doth flee;
On then, Christian soldiers, on to victory!
Hell's foundations quiver at the shout of praise;
Brothers lift your voices, loud your anthems raise.

Refrain

Like a mighty army moves the church of God;
Brothers, we are treading where the saints have trod.
We are not divided, all one body we,
One in hope and doctrine, one in charity.

Refrain

What the saints established that I hold for true.
What the saints believed, that I believe too.
Long as earth endureth, men the faith will hold,
Kingdoms, nations, empires, in destruction rolled.

Refrain

Crowns and thrones may perish, kingdoms rise and wane,
But the church of Jesus constant will remain.
Gates of hell can never gainst that church prevail;
We have Christ's own promise, and that cannot fail.

Refrain

Onward then, ye people, join our happy throng,
Blend with ours your voices in the triumph song.
Glory, laud and honor unto Christ the King,
This through countless ages men and angels sing.

Refrain

I had the distinct honor and pleasure of leading the West Point Spirit Band while they were here at the Pentagon on the day before the Army Navy Football Game on Friday, December 9. 2011. The female cheerleaders and band members came marching down my office hallway corridor toward me with beating drums and playing vivacious rhythmic music so I took the liberty at that moment to lead them from out in front with a strong beckoning hand to follow me. I felt like I had led the entire Long Gray Line when they were playing their U.S. Army cheer songs. The cheerleaders were thrilled when I told them my Dad was a West Point graduate Class of 1949! I was proudly wearing my distinct cadet gray colored suit with Dad's original USMA crest pinned to my jacket and the West Point ladies scarf tied around my neck that he had given to me.

The New Testament Book of James 1:12 says, "Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him."

God bless you!!!

In the love of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ forever,
Susan Lee Hindman (sUSAn)
