COL. (RET.) RUSSELL JAMES LAMP EASTHAM, MASS Beloved father, husband, and friend to many died at Belvoir Woods Health Center of an apparent stoke. He was born on the family farm near Cardington, Ohio, the son of Benson and Ruth Lamp. Farm life instilled in Russell a love for rugged outdoor life, a passion he followed for the rest of his life. He graduated from Groveport High School in 1942, then attended Ohio State University before entering the military and heading to Europe during WWII. After participating in the Battle of the Bulge, Russell returned to the U.S. to study engineering at West Point. On graduation day in 1949, he married his future life partner and best friend, Virginia Armstrong. Together they raised six children. Along the way, Russell earned degrees from MIT and George Washington University, and also attended the Army War College in PA as part of the US Army Corps of Engineers. Tours of duty took Russell out of the country to Germany, Greenland, Thailand, and Vietnam. On the mainland, he gravitated to assignments in the Washington, D.C., area where the family set down roots. When he retired in 1977, Russell was a full Colonel and had earned many awards including Bronze Star Medal, multiple Legion of Merits, the Combat Infantry Badge, Meritorious Service Medals, among many others. In retirement, Russell spent the next 10 years consulting on engineering projects in Saudi Arabia and Iran. Then he stopped his traveling ways and settled down in Cape Cod, MA, to enjoy nature, feeding his beloved ducks, fishing, and doting on grandchildren. He will be missed by all.He is survived by his six children: Russell Jr. (Oregon, OH), Barbara (Cortez, FL), Richard (Woodbridge, VA), James (Leesburg, VA), Thomas (Dale City, VA), and Stephen Scott (Ashburn, VA); 16 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Russell outlived his wife of 55 years and his three brothers. Russell and his family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all close friends, medical team members and caregivers, and family who have offered their support and love throughout the years. You made a huge difference in our lives and we truly appreciate you. A service of remembrance will be held at The Fairfax (Ft. Belvoir, VA) on Friday, May 9th at 10:30 a.m. An interment will follow later in the fall at Woodlawn Cemetery in NY. Source: Find A Grave
