MCMULLEN OBITUARY
Col. USAF Retired. Philip C. McMullen died on February 9, 2011.

He was born on October 12, 1925 in Kaw City, Oklahoma to Philip M. and Ermal Cummings McMullen. Phil grew up in Wichita, Kansas and Blackwell, Oklahoma, attending Oklahoma Military Academy and later graduating from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in the Class of 1949.

He joined the Navy during World War II, was in the Army Air Corp. after West Point and subsequently in the U.S. Air Force, so he was one of very few military officers who had served in three military services.

He acquired three masters degrees, two from the University of Michigan in Astronautical / Aeronautical Engineering and Instrumental Engineering, and a Masters of Business Administration at George Washington University. He was a lifetime member of the Order of Daedalions. His career included flying with the 60th Troop Carrier Wing in his first assignment at Rhein Main, Germany, teaching Military Topography and Graphics at West Point, managing nuclear programs at the Air Force Special Weapons Center at Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque, serving in the Air Force Systems Command at Andrews AFB, and managing research and development programs at the Pentagon. In 1967, Phil volunteered for an assignment in the Viet Nam War, flying F-4 Phantom jet-fighter aircraft on reconnaissance missions. He flew 169 combat missions, was awarded the Silver Star and 10 Air Medals. He had previously received the Legion of Merit. He was promoted to Colonel during his Viet Nam tour. He finished his Air Force career as a Command Pilot with over 3000 hours of flying time, retiring from the Air Force in 1976.

He then worked as a real estate broker for twenty years with Metro Brokers.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Margaret Ann Fey McMullen, his brother Bill McMullen of Denver, his son Philip M. McMullen (Ellen) of Colorado Springs, daughters Ann Walker of Fort Morgan and Mary Huggins of Centennial, five grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter.

Services will be private.
