June 6, 1925 â€" September 23, 2017

Gilbert Kirby passed away on September 23, 2017 in Atlantic Beach, Florida.

He was born June 6, 1925 in Shelby, Montana, the son of Gilbert and Leona Kirby.

After graduating from Shelby High School, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served in combat in the South Pacific.

In 1945, he entered the United States Military Academy at West Point and graduated in 1949 as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers.

He served in numerous assignments to include Battalion Commander of the 10th Engineer Battalion of the 3rd Infantry Division in Germany. His career spanned 40 years in the military including 22 years as a Professor, USMA.

Gilbert graduated from numerous military schools including the Army War College. He held a master’s degree in Civil Engineering from the California Institute of Technology and a doctorate from Columbia University.

Gilbert is survived by his wife of 65 years, Patricia Carroll Kirby and their four children: William C. Kirby (Melanea) of Highland Falls, NY, Anne K. Swanson (Carl) of Atlantic Beach, FL, Clare K. Jenkins (Richard) of Sammamish, WA and Elizabeth K. Fullerton (William) of Atlantic Beach, FL. He is also survived by ten grandchildren, Margaret Drake, Patrick Swanson, Lucy Dantes-Perry (Corbin), Catherine Johnson (Chris), Matthew Jenkins, Mary Jenkins, Kirby Fullerton, Clare Griffith (Harry), Avery Fullerton, Henry Fullerton and five great grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Atlantic Beach at 11:00 AM on Friday, September 29 with Reverend Mark Waters as celebrant.

Interment will occur at a later date at the United States Military Academy at West Point.
