Be Thou At Peace

Col. (Ret.) William Henry Nordin "Bill," 89, was the son of Hjalmar and Anna Nordin, a family of ten from Erie, Pennsylvania.

After World War II started, Bill volunteered in 1942 with the Army.
In 1944, he competed for an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point, was accepted, and graduated in 1949.
Upon completion, he selected the Artillery Branch, and his first assignment was in Germany. Over time, Bill worked his way through the ranks and retired as a Colonel.
During his career he earned a Master's degree from Purdue University, majoring in Mathematics. As a decorated officer, Col. Nordin's military career included a tour as Battery Commander in I Corps Artillery Korea, Army Chief of Staff Office at the Pentagon, and Commander of the 3rd Battalion 319th Artillery (Airborne) at Bien Hoa, Vietnam (two tours). After attending the US Army War College, Bill joined the Joint Chiefs of Staff, as Deputy Commander in Europe. His final tour of duty was with NATO in the Netherlands and Defense Intelligence in the Pentagon.

He retired in 1977.

Bill was predeceased by his wife of 55 years Elizabeth Jean Finley Nordin.

Bill is survived by his son Tom Nordin, wife Patti, and their children, all living in Florida; Bill's daughter Robin Nordin and her son of Virginia; and brothers Donald and Roy of Erie, Pennsylvania. Many nieces, nephews, and close West Point friends and their families also survive.
