Be Thou At Peace

John H. Birrell was born September 28, 1925, in Pocatello, Idaho.

He was a 1949 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, receiving his commission as a second lieutenant in the infantry.

He was promoted to first lieutenant on December 3, 1950. He was promoted to captain on April 29, 1954.
He retired from the United States Army on December 31, 1963.

After retirement, he was a civil engineer for the New York City Department of Water Supply.

He moved to Manatee County in Florida from Carmel, New York in 1992.

He died at age 71 on Friday, November 22, 1996 in Sarasota, Florida.

Survivors included his wife, Betty Jane; three daughters of Poughquag, New York, Sarasota and Pawling, New York and three grandchildren.

There were be no local services. Arrangements were by the National Cremation Society. Memorial donations were suggested to the Hospice of Southwest Florida, 6055 Rand Boulevard in Sarasota, Florida.
