HUGH MITCHELL OBITUARY
FORT MILL - Hugh B. Mitchell Jr., M.D. (Col. USAF, ret.), 88, of Fort Mill, S.C., passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012. Hugh was born in Bolton, Miss., the only child of Hugh B. Mitchell and Sadie McMillan Mitchell. He was a graduate of Georgia Military College, LSU School of Medicine and the U. Cal. Berkeley.

Hugh served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946 and 1950-1952, and in the U.S. Air Force from 1957-1975. He spent the majority of his military career in hospital administration and radiobiology research. He served as Aerospace Medicine Physician and Special Weapons Defense Physician as well as Hospital CO at Osan AFB, Korea, and Director of AFRRI in Bethesda, Md. After retiring from the Air Force, he worked for Springs Mills in the medical department.

Hugh is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Sybil Mitchell; daughter, Allyn Mitchell of Roanoke, Va.; sons, Hugh Mitchell and wife, Sue of Vero Beach, Fla., Jeff Mitchell and Chris Mitchell and wife, Lynette; grandchildren, Carrie Fahry, Beth Vogel, Kristen Mitchell, Nate Mitchell and Ian Mitchell; and great-grandchildren, Meredith and Bryan Vogel and Jackson Fahry. To the end, he loved his family, the Air Force, medicine, LSU football and dark chocolate.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, at Saint Philip Neri Catholic Church in Fort Mill, S.C., with Father John Giuliani, C.O., officiating. A visitation will follow the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Building Fund of Saint Philip Neri Catholic Church, 292 Munn Rd., Fort Mill, SC 29175 or The Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Online condolences to the family may be made at www.palmettofh.com.
