Henry "Turner" Croonquist 85, US Army LTC (ret.), died peacefully on Nov. 20 at the Community Hospital of Monterey Peninsula after a short hospitalization.

Lt. Col. Croonquist was born Nov. 5, 1923, in Manila, Philippine Islands.

He attended the Phillips Exeter Academy, Rutgers Preparatory School, and graduated from the US Military Academy (West Point) in 1949.

He served at domestic postings as well as in Germany, Korea, and Vietnam; was a member of the US Army Advanced Marksmanship Unit, winner of a Bronze Star and numerous service medals; after 27 years he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.

Turner presided as Headmaster of Stuart Hall School for Boys after his retirement from the military.

He resided in the Monterey Peninsula for the last 33 years. He was an ardent volunteer in the Community Hospital Auxiliary, was active in various ministries at San Carlos Cathedral, enjoyed SIRS membership, and served as a board member of both the Friends of Hospice and the Peninsula Dance Quadrille.

Turner will be remembered for his service to others, love of golf and painting.

He is survived by his three children, his brother, Paul Croonquist; his wife, Phoebe Croonquist; their children, and families; daughter-in- law, two grandchildren and special friend, Marilyn French.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 53 years, Claire Quinlan Croonquist, and their son, Michael Croonquist, of Telluride, CO.
