Robert Shebat

West Point, 1949

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Terry Powers on November 7, 2022:

Robert Shebat was the son of Herbert Shebat and Lila Walker Shebat. When he entered the USMA Class of 1949, he was already a qualified pilot. He was a multi-engine instructor, flew 55 combat missions in Korea, and was a multi-engine check pilot and flight leader in an all-weather interceptor squadron flying F-94C's and F-89D's. On June 23, 1955, he and Lieut. Arthur A. Landman, age 22, both members of the 58th Fighter Interceptor Squadron, died when their P-33 jet trainer crashed in North Kingston, Rhode Island about three miles southeast of the Quonset Point Naval Air Station. The force of the crash caused a crater of 35 yards in diameter more than a mile from the nearest dwelling. The trainer was on a routine instrument check and the cause of the crash was caused by carbon-monoxide poisoning of the two United States Air Force officers, who were based at Otis Air Force Base in Massachusetts. Survivors included his wife, Carol Sue of Pocassett, Massachusetts, his parents, Herbert and Lila Shebat of College Park, Georgia and his brother, Donald Shebat, USMA Class of 1954.
