Carolyn W. Spragins, a resident of Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community, died at Mission-St. Joseph Hospital on January 24, 2001. Carolyn entered the hospital two days earlier with a stroke.
Carolyn was the first-born of three children of Mr. and Mrs. Addison White of Huntsville, Alabama. Her brother, Mr. William White lives in North Carolina; her sister, Lucy Waesche, lives in Virginia.

Carolyn participated in many public school and Episcopal Church functions before attending Randolph-Macon College for Women. She attended this college from 1946-49. On July 18, 1949, she married Lt. Stewart V. Spragins, USAF. As a military wife of 24 years, she endured about seventeen changes of station, raised three children, and was the sole parent while her husband was on many extended temporary overseas duties.

Dotty Nielsen, Carolyn's oldest, is the wife of Brig. Gen. Paul Nielsen. The Nielsens now live at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio, and they have three children: Eric, Kristin and Steven. Bill Spragins, Carolyn's oldest son, lives near Marshall, NC with his wife, Leslie, and son, Sam. Van Spragins lives in San Francisco.

Carolyn and her family moved to 8 N. Dogwood Road, Asheville, in 1972. For just short of thirty years, she labored to make the house into a home and the yard into a garden. She served on the Vestry at Grace Episcopal Church, chaired the Grace Episcopal Country Store, was active in the French Broad Garden Club, and fully participated in book clubs and retreats.

Of all her interests that vied for time and energy, family and friends were paramount. She dearly loved her husband, children and grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Scholarship Fund, French Broad Garden Club Foundation, 1000 Hendersonville Road, Asheville, NC 28803.

The funeral services will be held at Grace Episcopal Church at 2:00 PM, Saturday, January 27, 2001. After the funeral service, the burial service will be held at Grace Episcopal Church. The Revs. Jane G. Smith, Steve Hines and the Right Rev. Robert H. Johnson will officiate.
