GENERAL ORDERS:
Headquarters, 1st Cavalry Division, General Orders No. 13 (January 18, 1951)

CITATION:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Ross Le Roy Johnson (ASN: 0-59176), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy on 13 September 1950 while serving with Company LO, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, in action near Shindo, Korea. During two very severe enemy banzai attacks on the forward positions of his company which forced them to withdraw, Lieutenant Johnson, exposing himself to enemy small arms and mortar fire, moved to the forward positions searching for wounded that might have been left behind. Upon returning to his company's new location, he immediately reorganized his company for a new attack. During the ensuing action, Lieutenant Johnson was wounded and the company was again forced to withdraw. Voluntarily, Lieutenant Johnson remained behind to cover their withdrawal and, when forced to move by heavy enemy fire, followed in the rear of the company assisting wounded personnel, even though wounded himself. Lieutenant Johnson's selfless courage and outstanding gallantry in action reflect great credit on himself and the military service.
