Tom C. Oberst, 52, 1805 Prather Drive, died today of a heart attack. After collapsing in his car, he was taken by ambulance to Metroplex Hospital, where he died shortly after arrival.

Oberst, a retired lieutenant colonel in the Army and a 1949 West Point graduate, served in Panama, Europe and Vietnam. He had been in the 2nd Armored Division and had served as inspector general of III Corps at Fort Hood before he retired. He graduated from Baylor University Law School in 1976, and was a partner in Simpson and Ray Attorneys in Copperas Cove.

Oberst is survived by his wife, Jeanne Oberst of Killeen; three sons, Dean C. Oberst of Copperas Cove, Tom C. Oberst III of Carrollton and Robert Oberst, of the home address; a daughter, Mrs. Ted (Anne) Spradley of Dallas; his mother, Mrs. Tom C. Oberst Sr. of Greenville, Miss.; and two granddaughters.

Funeral services have been scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday in the 50th Street Chapel on Fort Hood. Chaplain Patrick H. Hyde will officiate. Burial will follow in Killeen Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be retired Col. Myron P. Johnston, retired Col. Thomas Wesson, retired Lt. Col. Horrell H. Smith, retired Col. Louis Hanson, retired Col. William Ray and retired Lt. Col. Frank McDermott, all of Coryell County. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Bell County Bar Association. Harper-Talasek Funeral Home of Killeen is in charge of arrangements.
