MARTIN HOWELL OBITUARY
HOWELL Col. MARTIN D. HOWELL "Tiger" Of Alexandria, Virginia, died Saturday, November 17, 2007.

Born December 13, 1926 in Jacksonville, Florida, son of the Honorable Lawrence Damon and Catherine Cox Howell.

He served in the U.S. Army for 25 years following his graduation from the U.S. Military Academy in 1949. As a tackle on the undefeated Army teams of 1945, 1946 and 1948, he was selected for the All Eastern team.

He earned a Master's Degree (Magna Cum Laude) in International Relations from the University of Mississippi in 1959.
He then taught foreign policy at the U.S. Army Information Institute while completing work for a Ph.D. in Political Science, which he received from New York University.
Later, he attended the Army War College and was a Fellow at the Center of International Affairs at Harvard University.

His military experience included tours of duty in Germany and Korea and a combat tour of duty in Vietnam ("66-'67).

During his army career he was awarded a number of military honors, including the Silver Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star with V and Oak Leaf Cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross, and Army Commendation Medal with V and Oak Leaf Cluster.

He retired from active duty in 1974, receiving the Distinguished Service Medal, and was appointed by the President to the Federal Energy Administration as Associate Administrator for Management.
He was later Director of the Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance, Dept. of State, and served in various capacities as a Congressional consultant.

He was a 57 year member of Solomon Lodge Nr. 20, and a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies and Morocco Shriners.

He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, Gisela; his three children, Lawrence, Victoria and Christina; and his seven grandchildren, Kim, Martin, Lawrence, Harrison, Carolina, Catherine and Henry.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday, November 27 at St. John's Cathedral in Jacksonville, Florida, with interment at Evergreen Cemetery in that city.

A Memorial Service is planned at Grace Episcopal Church in Alexandria, Virginia on Thursday, November 29 at 11:30 a.m.
