He died while a prisoner of war.

United States Military Academy (USMA; West Point) Class of 1949, First Lieutenant Barnes was a F-84E Thunderjet fighter pilot assigned to the 522nd Fighter-Escort Squadron, 27th Fighter-Escort Group, 27th Fighter-Escort Wing. On April 22, 1951, while on a combat mission near Kumwha, Korea, his aircraft received a direct hit by anti-aircraft fire, and he bailed out safely. He was taken Prisoner of War and died as a POW on June 20, 1951. His remains were not recovered. For his leadership and valor, 1Lt Barnes was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Prisoner of War Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal. His name is permanently inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial (Find A Grave Memorial 154157772); also see the National Korean War Veterans Memorial (Find A Grave Memorial 118625076).
