Col.(Ret) William H. Goodwin, 81, of Fort Collins, Colorado passed away on Thursday, August 3, 2006.

William Hayward Goodwin was born on June 12, 1925 in Richmond, Virginia, the son of P.M. and Evelyn Goodwin. He grew up in Gordonsville, Virginia active in sports and Boy Scouts, he became an Eagle Scout.

He left home early to attend secondary school and college, eventually graduating from the US Military Academy West Point in 1949.

He was commissioned as a 2nd Lt in the US Army Field Artillery with his first duty station in post war Germany. As an ROTC instructor at Purdue University, he met and married Susan Riggs in 1954. He received a Masters of Mechanical Engineering from the University of Southern California in 1958. He was actively involved in the Army's early missile development programs at sites in Texas, New Mexico and Canada. He attended the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA where he became fluent in Thai and subsequently served as an advisor to the Royal Thai Army in northern Thailand. In 1963, he served at the Pentagon in Washington, DC. In 1967, he returned to Germany to command the 41st Artillery Pershing Missile Battalion in Schwabisch Gmund. From there, he served in foreign military assistance commands, first in Bangkok, Thailand and then in Taipei, Taiwan. He returned to the US in 1975 to command the Headquarters Battalion, Fort Jackson, South Carolina.

Bill retired from the Army in 1977 and began work as a hospital facilities services manager first at Children's Hospital, Denver and later at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado.

Bill retired from PVH in 1991 and remained in Fort Collins enjoying golf, sports, travel, family and grandchildren. He was an avid follower of the CSU Rams.

Col. (Ret) Goodwin is preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Susan Goodwin of Fort Collins, sons, Stephen Goodwin (Lorraine Burns) of Arlington, VA, Peter Goodwin (Lynne) of Los Alamos, NM, Philip Goodwin (Suzie) of Granite Bay, CA, and daughter, Karen Sipes (Les) of Fort Collins, CO. Also surviving are eight grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 8, 2006, at 10:00 a.m. at Allnut Drake Chapel, 650 W. Drake Rd. in Fort Collins. Mike Lundgren, Chaplain for Hospice of Larimer County, will officiate. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 9-10:00am at the Drake Chapel prior to the service. Interment will be in Fort Logan National Cemetery on Wednesday, August 9th, 2006, at 11:00 a.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Larimer County in care of Allnutt Funeral Service.
