Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Bruce Andrew Peters on February 6, 2004:

Dear Dad:

You are the greatest inspiration to me. You demonstrated perseverance, creativity and passion for all of live's pursuits - with a rare combination of excellence and modesty.

I remember how proudly you saluted the flag when we were on base, how you kindly helped the elderly get home from shopping, how when I was very young you instilled a Ranger's sense of adventure.

When the going got rough - be it under fire in Viet Nam or while raising two small children while earning your PhD - you didn't flinch. Instead, you followed your own advice: "put one foot in front of the other" - a lesson learned from your own very challenging beginnings.

Your presence in our lives is deeply missed: how we would love just one more camping trip, to talk about photography, go for a hike, work on projects together or go sailing. Instead, we are left with the emptyness of what could have been.

Yet, your passing has left me with many happy memories of a Dad who literally and figuratively climbed the world's highest peaks. And your inspiration to be a better person is the greatest gift for which a son could ask.

The aspiration to learn and improve from your example lives on.
You are in my heart today and always.

All of my love,

Andrew
