Be Thou At Peace

Retired Air Force Col. John C. "Chuck" Reed, 82, of Palm Harbor, Fla., died Saturday, June 14, 2008.

He graduated from New Castle High School in 1944.

He served a total of 34 1/2 years in the military � seven months in the Army as a volunteer before entering West Point; four years as a West Point cadet, graduating with the class of 1949; and 30 years as an Air Force jet pilot. He was a Distinguished Graduate of the Air War College, Montgomery, Al., in 1968, earning a master's degree in international affairs.

He flew the B-66 bomber in 53 combat missions in the Korean War.

In the Vietnam War, from December 1968 to November 1969, he was commander of the 41st Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron with 101 combat missions. He flew the EB-66 aircraft and the mission was to jam enemy radars and missiles for the fighter and bomber missions.

He was awarded the Defense Sustained Service Medal, twice the Legion of Merit, three times the Distinguished Flying Cross and seven Air Medals, the Meritorious Service Medal; twice the Bronze Star, plus numerous other awards. He proudly wore the prestigious Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Badge.

He was commander of the 475th Air Base Wing at Yokota Air Base in Japan from December 1972 to November 1975.
He went on to be one of the directors of the National Defense University in Washington, D.C., where he retired in 1979.

He then attended St. Petersburg Junior College, where he received his degree in real estate and pursued this career until his death.

He was an active member in St. Alfred Episcopal Church in Palm Harbor and had membership in the Air Force Association; Military Officers of America; Association of Graduates, U.S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y.; Korean War Veterans Association 14 of Pinellas Park, Fl.; and many others.

His most positive attitude and gracious smile will forever be missed. He loved the Air Force and flying, and cherished his years at West Point, where he made so many lasting friendships. As his classmates would say, "Chuck, a job well done, be thou at peace".

Relatives: his devoted wife of 42 years, the love of his life, Rose "Teri" Miller Reed; son, Roderick Nelson Reed and his wife, Sharon, of Riverside, Conn.; two stepsons and their wives, Dr. William M. and Beth Jenkins of Berkeley, Ca., and Robert S. and Karen Jenkins of Alexandria, Va.; twin grandsons, Andrew and William Reed of Riverside; three granddaughters, Kristin Sykes of Australia, Casey Jenkins of Daly City, Calif., and Danielle Jenkins of Berkeley; three great-granddaughters; a sister, Elizabeth Reed Finnessy of Duke Center, Pa.; a brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Robert C. and Lin Reed of New Castle; and numerous loving nieces and nephews.
