JOE TYE OBITUARY
March 19, 1926 - March 1, 2015
Joe B. Tye, Jr., died with great dignity and grace on Sunday, March 1, 2015, with his family and friends gathered by his bedside.

Colonel Tye was born in Marshalltown, Iowa on March 19, 1926. He grew up surrounded by verdant fields and white clapboard farm houses.

He left Iowa to attend the United States Military Academy, and graduated in 1949.

That summer, he married his soul mate, Janelle Fox Bowen, and began his career as a commissioned officer in the United States Air Force.

The couple enjoyed a peripatetic military life, with assignments in Florida, Texas, Colorado, California, Nebraska, and Germany, among others. He also served in Vietnam. During his 25-year career, Colonel Tye attended the Air Force Command and Staff College (where he earned a Master's Degree) and the Naval War College. His awards include the Bronze Star, Legion of Merit, and the Joint Services Commendation Medals.

Upon retiring, he pursued his second career as an artist. Drawing upon his Iowa roots and his love for his adopted city of San Antonio, he became recognized as a realist artist of Midwest scenes and local landmarks. He received a number of regional awards; his works were featured at the Odyssey Gallery, Sol Del Rio, and Cappy's on Broadway.

He enjoyed gardening and good music.

For over thirty years, he was a member of a fearsome tennis foursome who played regularly on Sunday mornings; and for twenty years, he served as a board member of the Martha Ellen Tye Foundation.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Janelle; four children: Joe B. Tye III (Sally), Steven (Jackie), Nancy Tye-Murray (David) and Allen (Karla) and seven grandchildren: Annie and Doug Tye, Shane, Erin and Jessica Tye, and Ellen and Aubrey Murray.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Avonelle Tank and his parents, Joe B. and Mina Tye.

He was a remarkable and cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend. The family is indebted to the healthcare staff at the Army Residence Community and Heart-to-Heart Hospice for their tender-loving care.

A memorial service will be held in the chapel of the Army Residence Community on Monday, March 16th at 2:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warriors, 12672 Silicon Dr., Suite 105, San Antonio, TX 78249 or the San Antonio Symphony, P. O. Box 658, San Antonio, TX 78294

Janelle B. Tye
September 16, 1928 - June 25, 2022

Janelle Bowen Tye, passed away on June 25, 2022, at the age of 93 in San Antonio, Texas.

As the granddaughter of the composer, Oscar J. Fox, Janelle was introduced to classical music at an early age, which gave her a life-long love of classical music and the San Antonio Symphony.

She was proud to be a fifth generation Texan and graduated from Jefferson High School in San Antonio and then attended the University of Texas, where she belonged to Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority.

She married Joe B. Tye, Jr. shortly after his graduation from the U.S. Military Academy. She loved the military life with Joe and enjoyed the years traveling with her children and participating in their many activities, including swimming teams and scouting.

After many moves, the Tyes returned to San Antonio, where Janelle quickly became involved in the musical world. Over the years, she served as president of the San Antonio Symphony League and The Tuesday Musical Club and on the boards of the San Antonio Symphony, the Texas Association of Symphony Orchestra Leagues, and the Opera Guild.

In addition to her musical interests, Janelle was dedicated to serving the city of San Antonio. She served as the civilian president of the Military-Civilian Club and the Live Oak Garden Club and served on the boards of the Children's Habilitation Center and the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, Mission Chapter. She taught Sunday school and was a member of the church Altar Guild and Vestry. She especially enjoyed founding and co-chairing the annual Children's Christmas Pageant.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joe, and it is only fitting that she joined Joe in heaven on this day, June 25, which would have been their 73rd wedding anniversary. Her parents, Nellie Fox and Francis Bowen, and her sister, Mary Francis Bowen, also preceded her in death.

She is survived by her sons and their families, and her daughter and her family, her seven adored grandchildren; and her brother.

Janelle loved her family with all her heart and cherished her many friends. She counted every day a blessing. Her family gives heartfelt thanks to the staff of the Army Residence Center, where she lived happily and comfortably for over 15 years.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you celebrate her life with a donation to the Church of Resurrection, 5909 Walzem Road, San Antonio, TX, or a donation to the Magik Theatre, 420 S. Alamo St., San Antonio, TX.
